  1. I came across this site by accident through the JobCentre site and thought it looked interesting - and lo and behold - I'm one of the first to post on the new forum.

Anyway I'm Phil and based in South Holland. I've been running my own businesses for some years now. The main one is website design and the other is retail fashion gifts. Now I need to change the businesses fromproviding pocket money to paying a reasonable income.

I'm prepared to give some help/advice on setting up websites free and I'm also looking for help on running the fashion gifts side as a party plan company

look forward to hearing from you

    Hi Phil,
    Also new to this site!
I too am in website design at the moment but finding it a very dificult unprofitable area to be making a true living in. Don't know about you but we seem to find the larger companies are driving the market down by continually providing websites for next to nothing and ridiculous hosting pakages for just pence!
We are now looking to diversifiy into other more profitable areas.

One of my ideas for a new career or business is web site testing but it may well turn out to be quite a mountain to climb for little reward.

    Phil,
Are you still looking for help with running the fashion gifts side as a party plan company?

  5. Hi,
    Bra manufacturers go bust,
    Plumbers go down the drain
    Builders go to the wall
    Publicans run dry

In my experience very few businesses collapse due to a lack of technical skills they collapse due to a lack of customers, WOOLWORTHS is a prime example. Before you start any new business do ensure that you have a market and have the ability to prospect enough customers. If anybody would like assistance on how to ensure they never run out of customers please contact me. I will see if I can be of benefit either now or in the future.
    I hope this helps.

  6. kjhblue, yes I would like your input on never running out of customers.
I have just recently started full time photography, and am specialising in architecture, commercial and life.
While I am a reasonably proficient photographer, it is the business side that needs some work.
My biggest problem area is in the marketing side of the business, and how to get my name out to the target market.

  8. It looks like we lost Kevin as well now, never mind the customers.

  9. Garry - I just looked at your website - nice photos. Have you posted any pix on flickr? Might be a way of getting interested folks to look at your pix and, if you do commercial photography it might be a good idea to hunt down some events organisers and banqueting/function co-ordinators in local hotels - these guys are often asked to recommend photographers. Even if this type of photography is not the main sort of thing you want to do you would potentially gain good opportunities to come into contact with potential customers.

Thanks for your suggestion. No I haven't posted on Flickr yet, I am on a few other sites like Photographers Direct and Ephotozine. I will have a look at Flickr though.
Good idea about the hotels and event organisers.

Another thing that occurred to me was about producing your own book of photos. I did one through blurb.com (pure vanity really!) but it looked good and if I was doing photography I might do a few books to have as sales tools or giveaways for good prospects.

  12. Hi,

I wonder if you guys have considered trying to tailor your product specifically for the Third Age (Over 50s) demographic?

At www.thirdage.co.uk we endeavour to provide interesting, entertaining and inspirational information for the over 50s. We over 50s should work to help ourselves and one another. Let's be honest about, no one else is going to!

In the future, I contend that a great many of us in our Third Age will have no choice but to consider self employment of some sort. That's how the Third Age website came about. Who else was going to employ me at the age of 59?

I would like to see Third Agers not only helping themselves, but helping one another at the same time. At thirdage.co.uk we are more than willing to promote small businesses set up by the over 50s, especially if they cater for the same age group. I would like to see other Third Agers supporting those businesses as well. Personally, I would far rather use the services of a fellow Third Ager than I would a younger person. If we as a demographic help and support one another, we all benefit!

So if you have a business you've set up in your 50s, please let us know. You can use the forum at www.thirdage.co.uk or the contact form: www.thirdage.co.uk/contact-us/.

Likewise if you're looking to set up a business and want help and support. We're not a charity and we're not going to do all the work for you. Remember, we're from a generation who were taught to stand on our own two feet! But if you are genuinely interested in helping yourself then we are more than willing to help you.

So, if you have set up a business in your Third Age, tell us about it using our contact form. If you're looking for an idea, a partner, advice or just a chat, use our forum.

I'm looking forward to meeting you at www.thirdage.co.uk
