I thought the following information might be useful for anyone considering self-employment who has been unemployed for more than 6 months.

I wanted to become self-employed for the past 6 months but the rules are that you have to have been claiming Jobseekers Allowance for at least 6 months before you are entitled to the much-needed financial help available from DWP and HMRC. So, I spent the 6 months 'unemployed' planning and preparing for the day I could sign off. I planned the day carefully and was very happy when I 'signed on' for the final time before declaring myself 'self-employed'. It has done wonders for my self-esteen and I love working hard to achieve my goals though working alone from home can be quite lonely. Things are moving slowly but in the right direction. I am a few weeks away from my first contract and my first invoice payment.... it's getting busy and I'm finally aligning my 'dream' with realistic goals.

First of all benefit entitlements whilst setting up a new business are quite generous providing you have been unemployed for at least 6 months. I received £50 per week self-employment credit for the first 16 weeks in addition to full working tax credits. On top of this I receive a generous amount towards my rent and council tax. The Housing Benefit people will help you fill in your declaration of self-employment earnings. I found them very helpful and although they got it wrong the first time round, they were very quick to rectify their miscalculation. I printed off the 'Gov.org' website the words that clearly stated the £50 per week self-employment credit for 50+should be disregarded when calculating housing benefit. A lot of the staff at the Housing Dept. were unaware of this. The Housing people will contact me every 3 months to report any change of circumstances. However, the working tax credits do not change for the first year even if I make £25,000.
I am also receiving the maximum Training Grant to take a 12 week web design course with PHP development. As my business is mostly internet-based I decided that this course was a necessity, enabling me to take charge of my shop and it's continual maintenance.
I full intend to make the most of this opportunity and feel very grateful for the financial help I'm getting as without it, my ambitions would still be dreams.
My advice is to do your own homework and go to the Jobcentre and Housing office armed with the necessary information. They don't know everything....so spell it out for them. It makes it all a lot easier.

Been out of work for a few years due to ill-health, then when I tried to get back into the market I found at 50 it was not going to happen.

All my experience in the property market from trade to (board level) didn't have a degree, so my business and life experience was all for nought lol.

Well I'm here to prove that not all entrepreneurs are 20 something and I'd like to talk to others on this board about how they intend to become the new/old business builders of this new decade. Maybe members with specific skillsets might be interested in what I'm proposing but either way I wish everyone here all the best.

I'm not quite sure if I'm posting this in the right place as this forum isn't laid out as I would expect.

Regards.

ThirdAge on "Over 50s Magazine Website"

Hi,

At www.thirdage.co.uk we endeavour to provide interesting, entertaining and inspirational information for the over 50s. We over 50s should work to help ourselves and one another. Let's be honest about, no one else is going to!

In the future, I contend that a great many of us in our Third Age will have no choice but to consider self employment of some sort. That's how the Third Age website came about. Who else was going to employ me at the age of 59?

I would like to see Third Agers not only helping themselves, but helping one another at the same time. At thirdage.co.uk we are more than willing to promote small businesses set up by the over 50s, especially if they cater for the same age group. I would like to see other Third Agers supporting those businesses as well. Personally, I would far rather use the services of a fellow Third Ager than I would a younger person. If we as a demographic help and support one another, we all benefit!

So if you have a business you've set up in your 50s, please let us know. You can use the forum at www.thirdage.co.uk or the contact form: www.thirdage.co.uk/contact-us/.

Likewise if you're looking to set up a business and want help and support. We're not a charity and we're not going to do all the work for you. Remember, we're from a generation who were taught to stand on our own two feet! But if you are genuinely interested in helping yourself then we are more than willing to help you.

So, if you have set up a business in your Third Age, tell us about it using our contact form. If you're looking for an idea, a partner, advice or just a chat, use our forum.

I'm looking forward to meeting you at www.thirdage.co.uk

Hi
am new here and it looks a good place to get advice.

I am just putting my new web site together and want to add a video to introduce my products (gardening tools) to visitors.

Video seems to be a good way to promote and market. Has anyone successfully used video on their site?

Whats the best way to make a web video ? Do i just video my tools? How do I put it on my web site?
It seems very technical and that's putting me off trying to use it.

Thanks in advance

Thanks

Hello Everyone,

Well we’re ALL being herded /corralled towards the (you know you just cant do without it) world wide web.

While I agree its unquestionably one of the worlds greatest technological advances, its also a place where people desperate to find information, knowledge, cheaper products, bargains, information, business opportunities, a new chance at life are taken advantage of!

My question is based in the world of property and it is: In the virtual world it would seem all the experts, all the gurus, are 20 something!! – It begs the question HOW CAN THEY BE, when they’re not even dry behind their ears?

How can someone of this age have all this knowledge?

Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to sound like I’m against Generation X, or into reverse-ageism, or “Youngism” if you like LOL . – I think this political correctness nonsense has gone too far (and if I didn’t have to make a living) I would be a leading campaigner to bring it to an END before it starts a war!!

Anyway back to the point; What I’m saying is as good as the web undoubtedly is, its FULL of clever ‘network marketers’ who never knew Jack about property two minutes ago but because they have the handle on niche marketing pages, wordpress sites, autoresponders, aweber etc, and because of these they build huge mailing lists, they are laughing all the way to the bank. Some most are just laughing at us, others are laughing and actually now believe their own press (and why) well its because desperate people are buying into them, shame really.

I’ve scoured the web looking for credible joint ventures, co-operatives where like-minded people help each other, share skills, invest financially in each other and that’s what I would like to kick-start here.

All I’ve found on my Super Highway journey is:

BUY my latest book £795 – for only £295 (nonsense)
JOIN my Mentorship program it will make you a Millionaire (Rodney) – only £199 per month. – “…Once you earn ??????? you can join our elite Platinum Club and receive all the bet offers – only £1500 per month if you sign up before…..
Come to our world beating seminar Xxxxxxx Hotel entrance for this extraordinary event is JUST £97 (online) or £127 at the door.

Blah, blah, blah….

MY QUESTION: What going to happen when real experts actually get web wise?
I hope that a couple of small projects that turn over a few million GBP will start here and this in turn brings publicity for this site and more life-skilled, real-skilled people will get together.

So I’d like to start a JOINT VENTURES string, hopefully it will get busy enough and they’ll give us our own TAG, I’ll be posting a couple of concepts I have and PLEASE join in if you have ideas, or I’ll try to ask the administrators how we go about this.

I’m 54 and I want to be at the front of this for the OLDERPRENEURS.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT TO TOO.

Best Regards,

Jim.

I came across this site by accident through the JobCentre site and thought it looked interesting - and lo and behold - I'm one of the first to post on the new forum.

Anyway I'm Phil and based in South Holland. I've been running my own businesses for some years now. The main one is website design and the other is retail fashion gifts. Now I need to change the businesses fromproviding pocket money to paying a reasonable income.

I'm prepared to give some help/advice on setting up websites free and I'm also looking for help on running the fashion gifts side as a party plan company

Hi all,

I am doing the market research for my business model (Garden / Landscape Ecological Design and Consultancy). I want to find out what aspects I can incorporate (and what aspects clients are likely to pay for).

I would therefore be very grateful for any and all respondents to an online survey I have compiled. It has 15 questions and should only take about 10 - 12 minutes to complete.

If you have the time, and / or if you could pass on the web link to anyone you know who has a garden I would appreciate it. the link is:

Hi,
I'm just posting to promote my web site for the Community Arts Organisation, "Crackpots CAO". Specialising in providing access to ceramics facilities, numerous projects have been conducted since 1984, usually involving pottery workshops along with kiln building demonstration and later a live firing. My latest interest in this area is in the development of an Intermediate Technology firing solution, - intended to lower the carbon foot print of the existing ceramics industries in developing countries, like Morocco for example. The web site contains the details of this project along with Crackpot's track record in words and with many photos.

The site also provides an on-line gallery for a variety of artists and musicians to show their portfolio. There are also numerous copyright free music and audio tracks and short videos available to download. The site gets updated every now and then, so it's worth popping back to check out what I am up to. Like the new eco self-build housing Co-Op, details of which will be posted in the next few weeks.

Please visit the site and feel free to comment on, anything you like, via the eMail link on the web site.

Hi All.

I'm new here and initially just looking for some simple advice.
I'm part way through setting up a e-commerce store, the margins seem good, I have my merchant number and will integrate with sagepay this weekend, the website is at the dev stage but should go active next week.

My query is about the LTD company I set up, it's very easy to set up but I'm a lot less sure about the administration of actually running one. I know I need to submit reports but to who and when?
Are there any courses I could go on? I'd prefer to go rather than just read.

My situation has been massive complicated by yesterdays events; I was told I'll be redundant on the 31st (Happy Christmas) and that means I'll have to claim and I'm afraid that having the company will cause huge problems even though it's going to be months before I can expect much return.

I could swap the company into my wife's name she's self employed but her work has gone dry as well.
How can I find out what it the best thing to do?

Many Thanks aamcle

hi,
I recently completed a 6 month course run by the BI in Stoke on Trent, the course is aimed at getting unemployed people started in self employment,
firstly to even qualify to go on the course one has to have been unemployed for TWO YEARS,
also it is illegal to even begin to make preparations to become self employed while one is claiming job seekers allowance,
so, after 2 years of unemployment I was allowed to start setting up my "business" from 16th of march this year, I am now given 6 months in which to buy all the tools and equipment I need, (I even had to move house so that I could build a shed in the yard) my business involves me buying in pottery and then painting the pottery firing it in my kiln and then selling it on, I am a trained pottery painter and ex wedgwood employee, and also a life long airbrush artist( as a hobby), and I decided to combine these 2 skills to produce "different" designs on china vases, bowls, tiles, etc.
at the end of the six month course (15th september, 08) I am expected to be able to earn a living and be trading, quite frankly this is just not possible after 2 years of unemployment and no financial help what so ever,
as of the 15th september I can no longer claim job seekers allowance, as I am "self employed" even though I am nowhere near ready to start earning,,
I can claim tax credits and am in the process of applying for this, but have been told it can take 6 weeks or more, and in the meantime I have NO income at all from anywhere, I am supposed to be running a business, yet I have no money for food let alone materials,
to sum up, I feel very mislead by the people who were supossed to "help" me, it perhaps wouldve been better to advise me against this course of action rather than thinking of me as another goverment cheque, I now find myself in debt to the tune of something like four thousand pounds, loaned by a very good friend (for equipment etc)
I have about 100 pounds in my bank account,(I sold my motorbike intending to use the money to buy materiels to get me started, instead I have had to use this cash to live on)
It now seems that I have no choice other than to give up and sign back on the dole,
a complete waste of a year of my life.
so anyone out there who has been unemployed for 2 years and is thinking of taking this option, try to see through the BS,
the government want to lower the unemployment figures, some agencies get paid for every person they take from the dole, ask yourself, do ANY of them have YOUR best interests in mind?
I am sorry that my story isnt quite so happy,
A Johnson (mr)

I am a Chartered Building Surveyor carrying out pre-purchase surveys on residential property and have been working on a self-employed basis since being made redundant about 18 months ago. I have been taking payment by cheque and bank transfer but feel from potential clients enquires that moving to accept payment by credit/debit card would be likely to win me more instructions.

Hopefully some of the forum's users will find this link useful:

www.proquinsoftware.co.uk

On this site you will find information about a job costing an operations management software package called ProQuin Enterprise.

It uses a simple approach to the problem of managing the day to day operations of service based businesses and is an ideal tool to get some structure into a growing business.

It allows you to process more with less (staff or numbers of hours) and as the business grows makes it so much easier to delegate work out without losing sight of the detail.

If you think it might be of use, you can get a demo over the internet in about 30 or 40 minutes and download a no obligation 30 day trial afterwards.

It will cost nothing to take a look at this, but if it is right for you it might save you thousands in the long term.

I would very much appreciate any comments (yes, good or bad) about a training programme I have spent years creating and am just about to start marketing.

It was created out of the frustrations of trying to learn what being a virtual entrepreneur was about, and running an internet business from home, as I am mostly housebound. I have also spent loads of savings on the development itself, the video tutorials and all the materials for the program.

I am struggling getting the concept across to people, and all I want to do is try to get the point across that what took me 5/6 years to leanr/test/experience, etc, can be done in 6/9 months as all my knowledge and experience is in this program.

You can find it here

Hi, I've just joined and wanted to say hello to everyone. It's not actually sunny today, however it is very, very hot and humid :)
I have an interest in Internet Marketing - I like finding niche markets and though I say so myself, I am pretty good at it. What I don't like is the technical side of it, ie. site building, article submissions, link building etc. I do enjoy writing and creating sales copy, articles etc, and I am fine with SEO and PPC.
It would be nice to find a business partner in or near Merseyside interested in the world of Internet Marketing and with sufficient Knowledge to start up what I believe to be a most lucrative enterprise.
I would love to hear from you.
The Internet doesn't have to be for the young person only.
I started a business a couple of years ago (Unrelated to Internet Marketing), and used the Internet to generate enquiries and I'm still in business.
It does seem to be a problem though, finding a business partner for a new venture when you are over the age of 50. (I am 51).
All the very best to everyone.
Deano

Having just started my new business, I thought others may find some of the resources I’ve discovered to be useful. Two area’s that caused me some consternation in the beginning, and the solutions I have found, allow me to make two five star recommendations to anyone considering a business venture that requires them to employ others.

Health and Safety

One of the major headaches for me was, having read all the negative publicity concerning Health and Safety; it appeared to be a minefield where a small error could result in significant costs to a new, or come to that, any business.

I found the Health and Safety website to be an excellent resource. It debunks common myths that appear regularly in the national press and it provides templates for all of the major health and safety documentation you require, even down to sample risk assessments that you can use to develop your own.

A business doesn’t require a Health and Safety Policy until it employs more than five people, my criteria to implement one before it was legally necessary was based on the fact that as the business grew, the time available to develop this type of documentation would diminish. Having a policy in place will become a legal requirement within the first couple of months and it was preferable to do this type of work before there were competing demands on my time.

Using the Health and Safety Executive website, I was able to complete the bare bones of a policy document and complete a full risk assessment encompassing all areas of the business in less than a day. It’s a living document, and as such must be reviewed and amended on a regular basis but the work required has been significantly reduced as a result of following the advice and using the simple templates on the site.

http://www.hse.gov.uk/

Payroll
I guess to any established business payroll is not an issue, for me it appeared a nightmare. A long hard look at the HMRC website left me confused and no wiser as to how to calculate tax, NI and my NI as an employer.

The BT business builder website came to my rescue and I could not recommend it highly enough for the payroll function. With no prior knowledge in this area, I was up and running in a matter of minutes and running payroll is a ten minute task each week.

The downsides to this FREE package for me are twofold; firstly, once you finalise your payroll the documents are no longer available for printing until the next time you run a payroll. Initially this caused me one or two sleepless nights not knowing that the next time I ran payroll the reports would be available again. Secondly there is no on-line help when completing tasks.

https://www.btbusinessbuilder.com/logon.jsp

I hope you find these sites as useful as I did
