Hi
am new here and it looks a good place to get advice.

I am just putting my new web site together and want to add a video to introduce my products (gardening tools) to visitors.

Video seems to be a good way to promote and market. Has anyone successfully used video on their site?

Whats the best way to make a web video ? Do i just video my tools? How do I put it on my web site?
It seems very technical and that's putting me off trying to use it.

Thanks in advance

Thanks

PS. Queens,
you can be a company director and entitled to receive benefits - depending upon your income.

As an employee of the company your situation is somewhat simpler and better than if you were a Sole Trader. The reason being that if you decide to pay yourself little or nothing at all, the agencies USUALLY want to see your pay slips ONLY. As a sole trader, you would have to show them a Balance Sheet every week/fortnight/month/ whatever. In this case they decide whether or not the business can pay you a wage and consequently whether or not they can pay you any benefits.
You may also be entitled to Income Support and Working Tax Credits if your income is low enough.

If you pay rent for your home, you can try to claim Housing Benefit and you should also apply for a discount on the Community Charge.

Regards David Urmston

Hi Queens,
I am sorry but I do not know anything about Pension Credits specifically.
Are these the same as Working Tax Credits ? If so, they will be managed by HM Revenue and Customs.
The best people to talk to about your situation is the benefit awarding body. Their telephone number will be on their letters, probably an 0845 number. Phone at 8-30am to 9am rather than later, as you will have a longer wait otherwise. They will answer all your queries, they are very helpful.
Otherwise it's back to the accountant. If he/she doesn't know off the top of the head, they should be capable of looking this up. But it may cost you more than the phone call to HMRC.

regards David Urmston

Yes, I am another happy 123-reg.co.uk user.

I've been with them for quite a while and have had no problems, so far. I also have a couple of other hosting suppliers, in order to spread the load should misfortune hit one. So another I use is Web Fusion, who are OK, but definitely not as good. While they provide an easy to use control panel to manage uploading files using a web browser, you are also able to choose to use an FTP program to transfer files, if you prefer. You could be disappointed though if you looked in the HELP files for help ! Well, that was the case last time I looked, which was when I first contracted them and was setting up the site. So I was more than a bit disappointed, but had to carry on. So it was lucky that I know stuff about IT.
Web Fusion provide a free site builder application with all their packages, however, as with many web hosting companies, the web building program only works on Microsoft Operating Systems. So if you use a MAC or Linux - this software will be of no use to you.

One thing you will notice as you shop around is the hosting solutions which use Microsoft operating systems are often more expensive than ones hosted on Linux based machines. This doesn't mean that Microsoft based solutions are going to be any better. It's simply that Linux operating systems cost nothing other than the cost of management. Whereas a Microsoft O/S costs the web host a licence fee for each user, each year.
Many would say that Linux based hosting is more secure. But, even though Microsoft server platforms are noted for their numerous vulnerabilities, Linux also requires security updates to stay ahead of malicious entities.

Security on any platform depends on the knowledge of the staff, their willingness to stay up to date and to implement updates and workarounds as they are made available.

Also, you will find very cheap hosting providers, but be warned, these free sites often are presented in a frame with advertisements around the outside. If you don't mind this OK, but some times the adverts can attract a visitors attention beter than your own content.

Do remember that you may not be getting more security just because of a high annual fee, some hosting is stupidly expensive without reason. However, if security is a priority, you have fewer providers to choose from, so the selection job should be easier, but it will cost you for services they provide, guaranteed uptime, data backups, load spreading, a dedicated machine, to name a few. Pipex may be worth looking at in this case.

Visit www.oxfordpcsolutions.co.uk for more IT in sight and for small business solutions and domestic IT services in Oxford.

Hi,
just joined and saw this post.
A great way to get started with a website is wordpress. The platform is free to download and use.
Its really easy to install and has a large community of developers.
There are plugins that will easily help you develop most aspects of your web site.

Its a complete content management system as well. Its not just for blogs either. Wordpress will run almost any style of website.

I have set up a couple of wordpress sites and its well worth looking at. You need to host the site yourself on your own web host.

Hello - this is for Graham, 3 messages above, and 10 months ago.

What happened? Did you manage to keep the Pension Credit, some of it at least, and Housing benefit, and still do some self employed work? I'm in the same boat but with a disability. I don't want benefits agency snoopers following me about to see if I limp badly enough.

Dear David Urmston.
That bit about benefits was interesting - is it the same for Pension Credits? I don't want to be caught breaking the law, but have just finished my training and won't earn anything for a while. I don't fancy starving. Very little is mentioned anywhere about Pension Credits and how to find your way round it's little crevices, not even in the Prime literature and website, only how to get it, not when and how and if to come off.
Thanks,
Queens.

Hi

The way we did it was to join the Federation of Small Business (FSB) so not only do u get all the benifits the FSB offer, leagal help line etc etc, you will be able to get a merchant bank account that will cost u nothing to set up, and we use the payment gateway Sage Pay used to be called protex, that costs us about £12 a month for the virtual terminal, plus about a 2% commision on credt card payments.

If u decided to go down this route when u join the FSB get thier rep to come and see u and help u put the application in for the Merchant Account etc, he will be able to advise u on how to go about it all.

Well I'm here to prove that not all entrepreneurs are 20 something and I'd like to talk to others on this board about how they intend to become the new/old business builders of this new decade. Maybe members with specific skillsets might be interested in what I'm proposing but either way I wish everyone here all the best.

I'm not quite sure if I'm posting this in the right place as this forum isn't laid out as I would expect.

Regards.

Hi ammcle,
Just came upon your posting and read with interest the points made by David,David and Ian.It is interesting that all of us of a certain age want to immediately find a course to learn something new,(no criticism intended, its just how we are!) and yet all of that information is out there for us to learn from- it is just a question of finding it.

If you join networking groups such as Linkedin and then find some of their sub groups to join you can glean a lot of information from them. There are also some great marketing people who dispense with their advice for free in the hope that you may pay them at some time for a specific service.Use them there is no obligation !

A couple I have found to be useful are Mike Seddon who is at www.kksmarts.com and Jarom Adair at www.InternetMarketingForBusinessOwners.com. Once on their emailing list you will get a lot of news letters, which I have found useful. If you don't you can always unsubscribe.

A book I use, when trying to do something specific is 'Search Engine Optimization for Dummies' by Peter Kent

I am constantly striving to improve my SEO and have been doing so since setting up my business last year:like painting the Forth Bridge really, there will always be something to do!

Hope this is of some use and good luck with your ventures

I second David and Abfabmedia's advice. Be careful about paying for search engine optimisation advice as much of it is not very good. Google will tell you the basics for free - and their advice is up-to-date. It may eventually be worth going on courses or taking professional advice, but get your web site well-established first.

There two things you can do in the early stages that will take you a long way towards improving your search-engine rankings.

The first is to make sure you put a lot of good, relevant content on your site for the search engines to index. Some people concentrate on doing this first before worrying about anything else. www.makeitandmendit.com concentrated on putting a hundred pages up (howerever, there are four of them involved in this venture, so they could share the load and also invited friends to contribute).

The other thing everyone correctly recommends is to get some links in to your site from other web sites.

For example. if you look at David's post he has put in two links below his signature - so he is getting links in to two of his sites just by posting in this forum.

Abfamedia meanwhile has got one link to his site, just by entering his web site address into the profile form when he posted his message.

For most people it's probably best to concentrate on getting at least 40 or 50 such in-links before worrying about more sophisticated ways of boosting their search engine rankings.

Ian.

The fastest way to get up and running is probably to set up a Paypal account. This allows you to take payments not just from other Paypal users, but from anyone with a credit or debit card that Paypal accepts.

https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/Marketing/general/PayPalAccountTypes-outside

Paypal is owned by eBay. Google has set up a rival payment system to Paypal, but I think it has far fewer users.

Regards,
Ian.

I am a Chartered Building Surveyor carrying out pre-purchase surveys on residential property and have been working on a self-employed basis since being made redundant about 18 months ago. I have been taking payment by cheque and bank transfer but feel from potential clients enquires that moving to accept payment by credit/debit card would be likely to win me more instructions.

Hi,
abfabme's advice is very good on the usefulness of courses. However, what he didn't say is that you can learn all about SEO by visiting Google's web site and signing up for a Google Account. This will give you direct access to Google's Web Master Tools and very importantly, easy to read documentation which describes what you want to know. And it doesn't come much fresher, plus it is free.
I run several web sites, my own and some client sites so I know how useful this stuff is.

Hi,
in reply to your question, "I know I need to submit reports but to who and when?"
This web site has all the information you want on this topic.
Your next question, "Are there any courses I could go on?"
Yes, depending on your location, there are organisations like, Business Link which operates in the Thames Valley Region. These run some FREE courses and some you pay for. These are very good for beginners. I also found similar course run by the Asian Cultural Centre in Oxford. Your local library should be able to help. Also you could find a longer course available at your local college of further education.
Lastly, regarding Claiming Benefits whilst starting up a business,
"How can I find out what it the best thing to do?"
You are entitled to one hour free consultation with most accountants. You will need an accountant if you do not plan to do your own accounting. If you shop around, you can ask them if they can advise on your specific requirements before you book the appointment. When you decide on one to give you your free advice hour, make sure you have a list of questions prepared so you won't waste time and discover later that there was something important you forgot to ask.

I am in a similar position, trying to launch a limited company whilst on Incapacity Benefit. If you go through the steps in the right order, there is some, limited help from the Job Centre. Keeping up "signing on" is important, you will ensure your National Insurance contributions are maintained apart from anything else. Then, you may also get help with Housing Benefit. Both these organisations will require Income Statements from you on a regular basis. These show them just how much income you have received in each period. You will/may be entitled to some assistance until you are earning above a certain threshold which is calculated according to your family needs.

I hope this helps.

Hi aamcle - Funnily enough this is my first visit here and I see this as my first post.

I have been an SEO, Internet Marketing, WordPress Blog Designer and Google adWords manager etc since 1997

I got into it quite by chance when I ran a posh wedding DJ business in San Francisco.

One thing to watch out for with so called "seo courses" is they teach well formulated but DATED practices.

SEO and related methods changes daily so that is one thing to be wary of.

When I lived in the US I was offered a nice $ position travelling around the country teaching seo for a large company (no names) and I paid to get into one of their SEO Training sessions to see what it entailed - Basically it was spiders catching flies (pardon the pun)

All they taught was three - four years old and no juicy new stuff so me not having the nerve to stand in front of a lot of small business people - basically - bs'ing led me to turn the offer down

My message learn yourself and watch out for the "honey traps"

Best wishes

David (aged 58!)

Hi All.

I'm new here and initially just looking for some simple advice.
I'm part way through setting up a e-commerce store, the margins seem good, I have my merchant number and will integrate with sagepay this weekend, the website is at the dev stage but should go active next week.

My query is about the LTD company I set up, it's very easy to set up but I'm a lot less sure about the administration of actually running one. I know I need to submit reports but to who and when?
Are there any courses I could go on? I'd prefer to go rather than just read.

My situation has been massive complicated by yesterdays events; I was told I'll be redundant on the 31st (Happy Christmas) and that means I'll have to claim and I'm afraid that having the company will cause huge problems even though it's going to be months before I can expect much return.

I could swap the company into my wife's name she's self employed but her work has gone dry as well.
How can I find out what it the best thing to do?

Many Thanks aamcle

Hi,
I'm just posting to promote my web site for the Community Arts Organisation, "Crackpots CAO". Specialising in providing access to ceramics facilities, numerous projects have been conducted since 1984, usually involving pottery workshops along with kiln building demonstration and later a live firing. My latest interest in this area is in the development of an Intermediate Technology firing solution, - intended to lower the carbon foot print of the existing ceramics industries in developing countries, like Morocco for example. The web site contains the details of this project along with Crackpot's track record in words and with many photos.

The site also provides an on-line gallery for a variety of artists and musicians to show their portfolio. There are also numerous copyright free music and audio tracks and short videos available to download. The site gets updated every now and then, so it's worth popping back to check out what I am up to. Like the new eco self-build housing Co-Op, details of which will be posted in the next few weeks.

Please visit the site and feel free to comment on, anything you like, via the eMail link on the web site.
