deano on "Are there any Internet Marketers on Sunny Merseyside?"

Hi, I've just joined and wanted to say hello to everyone. It's not actually sunny today, however it is very, very hot and humid :)
I have an interest in Internet Marketing - I like finding niche markets and though I say so myself, I am pretty good at it. What I don't like is the technical side of it, ie. site building, article submissions, link building etc. I do enjoy writing and creating sales copy, articles etc, and I am fine with SEO and PPC.
It would be nice to find a business partner in or near Merseyside interested in the world of Internet Marketing and with sufficient Knowledge to start up what I believe to be a most lucrative enterprise.
I would love to hear from you.
The Internet doesn't have to be for the young person only.
I started a business a couple of years ago (Unrelated to Internet Marketing), and used the Internet to generate enquiries and I'm still in business.
It does seem to be a problem though, finding a business partner for a new venture when you are over the age of 50. (I am 51).
All the very best to everyone.
Deano

JanelRoach on "Developing after considering future demand"

The extent to which a particular piece of developed land is likely to appreciate in value depends on many factors. Land appreciated in value mainly due to the sincere efforts of the community living around it to properly develop it.

Development always involves laying down fixed capital and other equipments for a future anticipated demand that is by no means certain. Only in the present can the community signal its demand. Thus one developer may be able to offer a much higher price for a piece of land because he can foresee a more profitable type of development arising from the future demand from the urban community. So a part of ‘returns on investment’ arises from the skill of the developer rather than from the efforts of the community. It is worth mentioning here that capital gains tax would be the most consistent approach to deal with this increase in the value of land.

Is the situation basically different when the increase in land values stems from the provision of infrastructure – schools, communications, water supply, a sewerage system and other public-utility services? In principle, the provision of such services represents investments, which should earn a stipulated return either through the charges levied on the proceeds from taxation or through levying other charges.

Even where the return on an investment consists largely of social benefits, e.g. public parks, they should eventually be manifested in higher house prices, which would give a high net annual value and thus a high rate of yield. There may be extra spillover benefits to the investment in infrastructure, which arises through agglomeration factors, e.g., an increase in job opportunities, which adds value to the land in the vicinity. Thus with respect to development of Properties Kerala is now witnessing a totally different pattern of development.

But it is hardly consistent for the owner of a piece of land to be charged a tax for certain amenities that are in addition to the taxes already paid by other forms of business whose extra profitability arises partly from different types of external economy, e.g. radio weather forecasts for shipping, daily market prices for farmers. Furthermore, gains from agglomeration economies may be accompanied by losses elsewhere through dispersal.

I would very much appreciate any comments (yes, good or bad) about a training programme I have spent years creating and am just about to start marketing.

It was created out of the frustrations of trying to learn what being a virtual entrepreneur was about, and running an internet business from home, as I am mostly housebound. I have also spent loads of savings on the development itself, the video tutorials and all the materials for the program.

I am struggling getting the concept across to people, and all I want to do is try to get the point across that what took me 5/6 years to leanr/test/experience, etc, can be done in 6/9 months as all my knowledge and experience is in this program.

You can find it here

While we are talking about BT, has anyone tried BT Tradespace? The basic service is free, and seems to offer a quick way of getting a trading (ecommerce) site started.

You seem to be able to put 50 products up with pictures, and take payment for them via Paypal (at 5 per cent commission).

http://whatis.bttradespace.com/whatsinitforme/

On the minus side there seem to be a bewildering array of different offers, and it seems easy to accidentally leave the Tradespace area and find some other bit of BT trying to sell you things.

However, if you persevere long enough to understand it it may turn out to be a good deal. I'd welcome any experiences.

Hi, not yet 'over the hill' - having retired, I am now starting my own company designing and making handcrafted, personalised greetings cards and keepsakes. Taking it slowly so as not to make too many mistakes with tax and so on. Very interested in other people's experiences at starting up this late in life.

Hello everybody,

We are a group of students working on a paper. We are trying to understand how people with illness or disability preventing them from working manage their personal budget. This information will help us advice people who have just turned in the same situation.

We therefore need to gather as much information as possible on how people adapt their life expenses after a serious injury or illness.

We developed a survey in order to better understand the people needs and difficulties.

The survey only takes 5 minutes to be filled in, and it would really help us.

We can use all answers. Even if you are not affected by a disability we would love to hear your opinion

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=GJXsoSEwpOCNJWdW_2fijtBg_3d_3d

Yes, sorry about this folks. Forums are a bit neglected by the admins of this site (of which I'm one), and I fear the populace are all off a-Twittering.

I think the problem is forums need a critical mass, and we have dispersed visitors off around the site by providing other places to make comments. Most of the individual stories allow comments, and we've just added an Ask The Experts feature, where both the designated experts and anyone else can give their views.
http://www.primebusinessclub.co.uk/category/ask-the-experts/

So the focus is rather taken off the discussion forums.

And Twitter is indeed a threat. I've just been trying it myself and it has some advantages, certainly for social and business networking.

But I do think forums still have a role, particularly for practical stuff, as replies are all nicely organised by topic and remain visible forever.

If you employ people, the good news is that the Statutory Dispute Resolution Regulations (they governed Disciplinary/Dismissal/Grievance procedures) have been repealed.

There is a new ACAS Code of Practice which is far less prescriptive than the old regulations but there are a few potential catches in the Code for the unwary and there are transitional arrangements for events that started before April 6th.

You can download a copy of the Code here http://tinyurl.com/ACAS-Code09

Garry - I just looked at your website - nice photos. Have you posted any pix on flickr? Might be a way of getting interested folks to look at your pix and, if you do commercial photography it might be a good idea to hunt down some events organisers and banqueting/function co-ordinators in local hotels - these guys are often asked to recommend photographers. Even if this type of photography is not the main sort of thing you want to do you would potentially gain good opportunities to come into contact with potential customers.

Think there was a problem with my post.

Just wanted to introduce Online Market Research to everyone as many people still don't know about it...

The current economic climate is having an impact on businesses large and small. Many are suffering while others are discovering new opportunities. Several people who lost their job think about launching their own business.
What is clear is that the uncertainty means that researching a business’ market has never been more important.

It’s an essential stage in the business start-up process but many entrepreneurs don’t do it – not least because of the supposed cost.

Online market research has grown rapidly in recent years as a key form of data collection for primary research activities. Online market research offers both large and small research focussed organisations the chance to eliminate the costs involved with face-to-face, postal and telephone data collection. Organisations have begun to realise also the speed and data reliability offered by the internet.

Have a look at Marketest

I'm a newbie on this forum so hi all.
Just a thought as having reached 60 and now on pension credit.
Because it is means tested I am only allowed to earn £10 a week without it being deducted. I'd like to start up in business again - having not long returned from overseas - but this rather puts a damper on things unless I can somehow side-track earnings against expenses etc whilst starting up.

I'm not happy about being on state benefit and would much rather pay my own way but such restrictions do oblige a 'leap of faith' into the self employed tight rope without a saftey net.

kjhblue, yes I would like your input on never running out of customers.
I have just recently started full time photography, and am specialising in architecture, commercial and life.
While I am a reasonably proficient photographer, it is the business side that needs some work.
My biggest problem area is in the marketing side of the business, and how to get my name out to the target market.

Hi Samuel,
I think you have a point however have you considered, taking on your commissions completing them and ask the purchaser to pay for the materials and defer the full payment for the commission. Have the purchaser place the payment into an escrow account until such time as you build up enough capital to show yourself a reasonable income for say a year. This way you can do the work you like without receiving payment. Alternatively use this marketing plan X% deposit remainder paid in 2010. A simple contract will cover that arrangement between artist and buyer?
I hope this is something you may want to consider?
Kevin

Hi,
Bra manufacturers go bust,
Plumbers go down the drain
Builders go to the wall
Publicans run dry

In my experience very few businesses collapse due to a lack of technical skills they collapse due to a lack of customers, WOOLWORTHS is a prime example. Before you start any new business do ensure that you have a market and have the ability to prospect enough customers. If anybody would like assistance on how to ensure they never run out of customers please contact me. I will see if I can be of benefit either now or in the future.
I hope this helps.

One piece of advice I would give to anyone considering setting up a business is to see an accountant before starting to trade. Most accountants will give an initial consultation free of charge and getting the structure of the business right from the beginning could save you money. I am an accountant myself and often see potential clients after they have been trading for some time and know that if they had spoken to me earlier I could have saved them some money, but often it is too late by the time I meet them.

Good luck to anyone starting up a new business, whatever age you are.
