Essential Enterprise Day is a free PRIME event for anyone over 50 who is thinking of starting a business or planning to be self-employed. There is an exhibition in the afternoon, with a programme of free workshops, followed by a free seminar in the evening.

You will need to book in advance for both the afternoon workshops and the evening presentation to be sure of a place. The booking form is here. But you can drop-in to the exhibition.

At the exhibition starting at 1.00pm you will be able to get advice, support and information from local experts in self-employment and business start-up. The programme of free afternoon workshops covers the basics of self-employment, making your business profitable and the ins-and-outs of tax.

In the evening from 6:30pm to 8:00pm there will be a presentation by Tom Edge, a world-class inspirational speaker, on his tips for conquering ageism and setting up a successful business when you are over 50.

At the free exhibition from 1:00pm to 5:30pm you will be able to get advice, support and information from the following exhibitors:

  • HM Revenue & Customs - your opportunity to ask an adviser about specific Tax and NI issues, including Self-assessment and Record Keeping.
  • Local Enterprise Agencies - find out about the range of support and training the network of Local Enterprise Agencies can give, including the Start a Business programme and specialist support for social enterprises.
  • PRIME – find out more about the help available from our 50+ enterprise programme
  • Meet the Mentor – find out about PRIME’s free mentoring support from a team of local volunteers who understand business.
  • Creative sector support – specialist support and advice for people setting up creative, arts and design-based businesses.
  • Franchising Support – specialist support and advice for anyone thinking of taking on a franchise, or developing their businesses via franchising.
  • Training for business – find out about training that’s available from local colleges

FREE AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS – BOOKING ESSENTIAL

During the day we’re running three different workshops at 2.00pm, repeated at 4.00pm, giving visitors a chance to attend two sessions. Workshop presentations are timed to last around one hour, with a further 30 minutes for questions.

  • Workshop A: Get Going – the Ins and Outs of self-employment
    Presenter: Maurice Johnston
    Maurice, who describes himself as a Business Improvement Facilitator, was highly commended for his last PRIME workshop, “The One Man Enterprise Zone!”This workshop draws on Maurice’s many year’s of experience in business, and looks at the realities and different routes into self-employment, ending with a little push to get you going!
  • Workshop B: How to double your profits in 12 months or less
    Presenter: Tom Edge
    Tom, the ever popular a business guru and inspirational speaker, has worked with PRIME for several years; Tom’s down-to-earth style and sense of humour always go down well with audiences.This workshop focuses on harnessing sales and marketing techniques to improve profits, with interactive exercises and real-life experience.
  • Workshop C: Tax and NI – what you need to know
    Presenter: John Casey, HM Revenue & Customs
    John is an experienced adviser for HMRC, and has helped numerous PRIME clients with questions about Tax, NI and related issues at local enterprise events.This workshop is important for anyone taking their first steps into business, and covers registration for self-employment, National Insurance contributions, record keeping, self-assessment and important tax dates. You’ll probably find there’s a much broader range of help from HMRC than you thought.

EVENING PRESENTATION – BOOKING ESSENTIAL

AGE IS NO BARRIER - Top tips for setting up a business when you are over 50, starting with a free buffet and networking session from 5.30 to 6.30, Tom Edge, our ever popular inspirational speaker will present his views on why, when you’re 50 or older, you have a better chance of ‘making it’ in business. Tom draws on his many years of business management, with an action-packed 90 minutes of practical tips and advice, interspersed with humorous anecdotes - unmissable.
