I am a 55 year old lapsed illustrator/graphic designer who needs some help to resurrect a career. I was trained on flat artwork i.e. hand drawn, airbrush, painting etc). I currently require tuition in illustrator, In Design, Freehand and Dreamweaver (I need a website) to bring knowledge up to date. I have a Mac but need extra software and equipment (digital camera, drawing tablet).

I am currently doing a FE teaching qualification at Huddersfield Uni (PGCE) and am teaching community education in Leeds and North Yorkshire. I don’t earn a great deal and have a son at University. Would there be any support or information I could access?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards,
    Susan Mitchell

Do I have to book this event?

Learn Direct’s own courses are probably too elementary for you, but they have a “Find a course” search facility at http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/ that would find for example local Dreamweaver courses.

Re help with finance, some colleges have their own mean-tested learner support funds. There’s no general educational grant available to people in our age group.

There may be local schemes to help particular sectors or types of people - for example if you live in a rural area Women in Rural Enterprise is Yorkshire-based and a good network to join http://www.wireuk.org

There are many initiatives aimed at supporting arts-based businesses, but web design often isn’t regarded as arty enough.

Business support and funding help in the UK is largely based on where you live. If you enter your post code into the “Find nearest” box on this page you’ll find PRIME’s local partners who will know about the local situation.

It may also be worth doing the same thing at Prowess’s web site - they specifically support women in business and have some different local partners to us http://www.prowess.org.uk

Re booking events, yes - please book. I’ll amend the events item to make that clear. Thanks for pointing it out.

We usually need people to book so we can estimate numbers, unless it’s a show-type event geared up for people just dropping in.
